“…I’ll be there in ten.”

Calling…Winston “The Wolf” Wolfe, we have a situation here.

A split second is all it took, and right under our noses.  There was a reason the rabbits were in our yard today…and now there isn’t, Biggs and Obi have taken care of that.   We don’t like rabbits in our yard, we’re not prejudice mind you we love all of God’s creatures but we’re seriously concerned for their well-being when they visit our yard.

Unbeknown to us a mother rabbit gave birth to 6 or so babies in a patch of vincas beneath a canopy of scotch pines in our backyard this morning.  Shortly before 9 AM the westie alarm went off in our home alerting us to backyard intruders. After chasing the wascally wabbits from our yard we let the westies out thinking all was clear but we were gravely mistaken.  The boys were hot on the trail…noses to the ground in the rabbit scented grass when we took our eyes off them for a minute or so only to hear Biggs’ call of the wild.  Biggs rarely barks even when trapped until the shed that summer but today he let out a victory cry like I rarely hear from him with his deep throaty repeated celebration “roo roo’s.”  He had dug up the entire nest of still wet baby bunnies and was treating Obi to some very fresh backyard buffet when we glanced back to see Obi munching on his morning’s breakfast.  I guess he had an inkling that fresh was on the menu today because the “canned” rabbit we put in his bowl this morning remains untouched.

My husband played the part of “The Wolf” and cleaned up the situation but a queasy feeling still remains in my stomach.  I keep telling myself this is after all what dogs do…and the rabbits made a big mistake coming here especially when the neighbors on all sides of our yard have no pets at all to cause such loss of life.  Rabbits have made this mistake once before by nesting in the whiskey barrels that are home to my herb garden.  They did not realize Biggs is quite a jumper.  Not one bunny survived that encounter.

Rabbits beware…the westies are on patrol 24/7 so find another place to raise your families.
